Prayers For Today

O God: Give me strength to live another day; Let me not turn coward before its difficulties or prove recreant to its duties; Let me not lose faith in other people; Keep me sweet and sound of heart, in spite of ingratitude, treachery, or meanness; Preserve me from minding little stings or giving them; Help me to keep my heart clean, and to live so honestly and fearlessy that no outward failure can dishearten me or take away the joy of conscious integrity; Open wide the eyes of my soul that I may see good in all things; Grant me this day some new vision of thy truth; Inspire me with the spirit of joy and gladness; and make me the cup of strength to suffering souls; in the name of the strong Deliverer, our only Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. - .........O Thou who givest visions to them that praise Thee, give us also the courage to make our dreams come true. Help us to know that the ideal cannot evade us forever, that it is knocking at the door, wondrously fair, wondrously practical, an urgent pressure upon us, hungering to be made real............ - O Lord, who has taught us that thou wilt require much from those to whom much is given; Grant that we whom thou hast called to so goodly a heritage may extend more abundantly to others what we so richly enjoy, and in serving them may know the glory of serving thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. - ...........O Lord, I have done something wrong and I am afraid. I am ashamed, but more than that, I fear that those who love me will be ashamed. I know it is my fault that I have done this thing and it cannot be undone, but help me not to be a coward. If I can make things better, show me how. And above all, do not let me add bad to bad because I am afraid to let someone know who I am. {Avery Brooke (alt.)} - .........Teach us, Good Lord, to serve Thee as Thou deservest; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labor and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do Thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. - .......O Son of God, perform a miracle for me: change my heart. You, whose crimson blood redeems humankind, cleanse my heart. It is you who makes the sun bright and the ice sparkle; you who makes the rivers flow and the salmon leap. Your skilled hand makes the nut tree blossom and the corn turn golden; your spirit composes the songs of the birds and the buzz of the bees. Your creation is a million wondrous miracles, beautiful to behold. I ask of you just one more miracle: beautify my soul. - .......O Lord our God, teach us to ask for the right blessings. Guide the vessel of our life toward yourself, the tranquil haven of all storm-tossed souls. Show us the course we should take. Renew a willing spirit within us. Let your Spirit curb our wayward senses and guide and enable us to our true good, to keep your laws and in all our deeds always to rejoice in your glorious and gladdening presence. For yours is the glory and praise of all your saints for ever and ever. {Basil the Great (330-379)} - ........Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. {BCP (p.823: #25)} - ...........Heavenly Father, we remember before you those who suffer want and anxiety from lack of work. Guide the people of this land so to use our public and private wealth that all may find suitable and fulfilling employment, and receive just payment for their labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. {BCP (p.824: #30)} - ..........Almighty God, giver of every good gift, look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this Parish, that we may receive a faithful minister who will care for your people and equip us for our Ministries, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. - .......Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. (Prayer attributed to St. Francis) - ......O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
